The story of teachers extorting money from the poor and unfortunate students is not new. It is a common practice under Hun Sen's Cambodia. But to hear such heartbreaking words from a frightening student it saddens me.

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to add my two cents. I currently live in Cambodia and can assure you that the BBC arcticle is an accurate representation of the education system in Cambodia. The majority of children go to schools where the teachers are poorly trained, poorly compensated, and try to make more money by charging fees for tests, books etc... Recently I was in Kep, and talked with several people about the poor situation of education there. A lot of times the children are at school much of the day without the teacher even being there. Of course, the number one cause for all of this is government corruption.

Furthermore, It also seems that even in Phnom Penh, which supposedly has better education, most private "international" schools teach mostly english, thus leaving most people without real skills. Education is a big business in Phnom Penh, and English is presented as the key to getting a good job, so consequently we have a lot of college grads without jobs now (but they speak english).

deacon, the situation in the states is not the same. we are punished because we do not do well is justifiable under my opinion as when we were younger, we tend not to think far to the future. However, the situation in Cambodia is that the punishment is not because the students do not do well but rather because they do not have money to pay for private study or photocopied materials.

*The story title is too harsh in my opinion and hence I've made changed to the title.

you are right, mate. it's like getting worse day by day. Actually, I think BBC does not just put up the news because of news reporting but it works to help "remind" our government to look at this area. This is something true which shall be looked at. Having said that, you may have other opinion about publishing, mate :)

Even if it were true now. So What? When and where I went to school in the states we were struck, forced to stand, and threatened and denigrated in public when we did not do well. That did not seem to hurt us.
In fact the generations of us who went through that created massive advances in the sciences and produced the so called "greatest generation".

It's been over 10 years we have heard that kind of story. Some of us, might have already faced that kinda situation, but I can't believe that it's getting worse and it's still there. I learned about this story from our friends in ITC group, I wouldn't spreed this info on the net if I were you ;)

A new website is being built for our charity. We are going to start by helping people in Cambodia. We will raise money for the purpose of building orphanages for children without a home, and support schools so everyone can have an education, even adults. We will teach skills so people can start working right away and make money for their family.
Everything will take time, but we are on our way, so we'll see you there!!!
